ImageA few metres inward from the day is the grave of the English poet Rupert Brooke, who died and was buried here, following his wish, on the 23rd of April 1915, at the age of 28, while serving in the British Navy during World War I ,
His statue stands in a beautiful square at the north-eastern point of the village, near the archaeological museum and the chapel of Agia Triada.
This statue symbolizes eternal poetry.
There are two inscriptions engraved on both sides of the base :
"This monument was erected in 1930 following contributions on an international scale – ‘Now that I have seen the sacred land of Attiki I can die’"
and "To Rupert Brooke 1887 – 1915 to eternal poetry".
He unveiling took place on the 5th of April 1931, by the then Prime Minister of Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos, and was attended by many Greek and foreign dignitaries.
